Pictured above is Granovsky Associates' Mola made by Cuna
Islanders in Panama. This
unique gift was given to Dr. Granovsky in 1985 by Calixto Him Arcia of
Panama.
This traditional Art has been made and utilized as part of
their clothing by the Cuna people for decades. The multi-layered
molas are carefully cut and stitched into exact patterns, often depicting
scenes from their island environment. Each mola may require hundreds
of hours of work. Actually, these cloth panels, which have now
become an important art form and source of cash, are a colorful outgrowth of
traditional Cuna body painting and tattooing.
