PREVIOUS 2010 Presentations

"Professionalism"
Presented at Texas Pest Control Association 2010 El Paso, TX
Workshop.  Intended to help Pest Management Professionals think about their activities, their relationships, and their work.

"Ants:  Key Species and Successful Ant Management"
Presented at Texas Pest Control Association 2010 El Paso, TX Workshop. Correct integration of the “right” exterior sprays and baits with the indoor use of various baits, good application techniques, a variety of  active ingredients will help ensure successful ant management.   It also helps to understand how Ant Biology impacts your program.

"Termites:  Advanced Termites Inspections"
Presented at Texas Pest Control Association 2010 El Paso, TX Workshop. Detecting this group of HIDDEN pests requires a good combination of solid training and effective tools.  Understanding diverse types of construction techniques, local practices and multiple types of termite conducive conditions must all be integrated during the inspections.  The KEY individual in all of this is the trained inspector who must integrate a vast quantity of knowledge with local conditions and buildings practices to effectively find termites.  This program is full of useful information for termite inspectors and is intended to help reduce costly errors.

"Pesticides: News Formulations for Urban Pest Management"
First presented during Pest Management Canada 2010, in Ottawa, Canada, this program provides an in-depth description of modes of actions ( MoA ) for insecticides available to PMPs.  This program is based around the 28 different chemical classes proposed by IRAC, Insecticide Resistance Action Committee, with Dr. Ted’s adaptation for effective management of common urban pests.Internal insects drawings utilized on slides 7, 12, 13, 14, 16, 17, and 20 receive the following credit for use: Illustration courtesy of Piotr Jaworski (Creative Commons license), modified by Debbie Hadley, Guide to Insects, About. com (insects.about.com).

"Termites:  Training and Intergration in the U.S.A."
This program was presented in Paris, France at the First Termite Market Development Conference, 4 February 2010.  It reviews how the U.S. uses Integrated Pest Management and intense technician training for effective termite work.  The ROLES PLAYED by 12 different groups are also reviewed:  EPA, States, Universities,  Entomological Society of America, Consultants, Manufacturers, Distributors, National Pest Management Association, Local-State- Regional Associations, Pest Management Firms, Termite Technicians, and Consumers.

"Retail Operations and Documentation"
Green Pest Management requires good communication, cooperation and documentation, especially in retail operations.  Nine traditional and 16 more advanced methods for effective documentation and communication with clients are covered in this program which as presented during the 2009 Annual Convention of the National Pest Management Association held in Las Vegas, NV.

Potential Presentation Topics
"Urban Pest Signs, SCATS, & Sleuthing"Great visuals for beginners or seasoned veterans who believe they know it all.  Knowledge of this topic can increase effectiveness of
pest services through more accurate pest detection and reduced need for call-backs and re-treatments.  Tips for collection, storage and use of training materials associated with this topic.

"Cockroaches:  12 Reasons for Bait Failures" Main causes covered include: active and inert ingredients, bait formulations, behavioral avoidance, environmental impacts, genetic aspects, life stage and sex.

"Cockroaches:  Commercial Account Management"Dr. Ted has managed dietary areas in facilities located hours from his office with very effective results.  This system has been shown to provide positive results in both temperate and tropical kitchens.

"Flying Insects:  Management and Trapping" Reviews KEY basics for effective fly control, common problems with light trap use and will help participants develop their own customized fly control programs.

"12 Keys Items & Implementation at Hospitals"Real world implementation and insights into the workings of an effective pest management program for pest associated with health care facilities.  This program is based on over 25 years of weekly work with health care facilities.

"IPM-Food Facilities:  Humans Cause the Problems"Hundreds of pests can infest food processing facilities, but HUMANS actually cause most food plant pest situations.  A program full of multiple concepts about effective, NON-CHEMICAL means for long-term pest management of crawling and flying critters.

"Food Facilities:  Service Audits"
ISO vs GMP vs SOPs are all intended to standardize process and improve quality of processed products.  Types of audits, the Who, What, When, Where, Why and Audit results were all covered in this presentation done in Argentina for food processors and pest managers.   Both interior and exterior components of these program evaluations were included.

"Food Facilities:  Pest Exclusion Needs and Solutions" Reviews systems available for monitoring pest entry sites, problematic openings in facilities, impact of  types of lighting, air flow issues, exterior vegetation issues and employee education needs.

"Food Facilities:  Common Pests, IPM & Humans" Common flying pests include a variety of ants, bees, birds, flies, mammals, wasps; whereas, over 25 types of crawling pests are typically associated with food facilities.  All of these need to effectively managed through effective IPM programs.

"PCOs & PMPs in Latin America"
A working understanding of geography and cultural sensitivity help Dr. Ted’s work throughout the Americas, especially in 17 countries South of the U.S.A.   Key pests and public health issues are closely related in many of these markets.  A closer look is included for the Argentinean, Brazilian and Mexican markets.

"Service Kits & Checklists for General Pest Work" The diverse activities of a typical general pest service technician requires they be well trained and organized.  Having the right tools, equipment and chemicals on-hand is essential if effective and timely service is to be provided.  This presentations reviews 10 or over 20 specialized service kits which should be on service vehicles for this type of service route.

"SPI:  Food Pipeline Problems and Losses" With a Ph.D. degree in Stored Product Insects, Dr. Ted has worked on a number of projects in Latin America dealing with grain losses and ways to effectively avoid such losses.  The presentation reviews grain production and post-harvest processing issues as they relate to losses.  A review of basic improvements are also included in this program.

"SPI:  Storage Insects and Key Aspects of Management " A large number of storage insects can reach pest status if effective and timely interventions are a part of post-harvest activities.  Improved pest detections, correct identifications and pest prevention methods for inside and outside processing facilities are part of this presentation.

"SPI:  Storage Product Insect Detection Systems"
Detection of a broad range of stored product pests is possible in and around structures with a variety of methods, including:  Pest Packs can detect a broad range of pest species; whereas, Pheromone Traps are much more species specific, in most cases.  IPM depends on early pest detection and these systems facilitate this process.
